Hmmm... I've got an old X-Files book lying around somewhere by Kevin J Anderson. Maybe I'll need to head along to this one |

| A successful event and an interesting evening, with quite a turnout. Kevin presented a substantial talk and fielded many questions. Notes and photos were taken. More details will appear soon. |

Notes... yes, Dan was furiously taking notes, and hopes she didn't get them wrong!
I'll try to break this up into easy to digest chunks I'll start with general comments.
Kevin spoke for about 45 minutes on all sorts of things. He answered questions as eager customers put them forward and was wonderfully entertaining.
He emphasised that both he and Rebecca are fans themselves, and therefore understand the frustrations of waiting for the next installment of your latest 'must read' series.
Kevin writes about 7 books each year, and due to this speed, he has plenty of time to explore the new ideas that pop into his head. Somehow he manages this despite touring schedules and the like which this year have had he and Rebecca away from home for the majority of the last 2 months! |

On Saga of the Seven Suns...
When asked which are his favourites of the books he has written, Seven Suns was the answer!
The most important bit of news for fans is that while in Melbourne he finished the writing part of book 7 Ashes of Worlds, which will be the final book in the sequence. He joking said "they all die, the universe blows up... but then they get better...", to which I wondered if he'd been chatting with Tim, since Tim always comments that they all die in the end if customers ask about any books. Apparently the search for a title for this final book went through Kevin's myspace site (and over 150 sugestions from fans) before he found the right inspiration.
Seven Suns was written with the hopes of appealing to fans of both the Dune and Star Wars novels that Kevin had written. Apparently they all end in cliff hangers (although there was a promise that things are resolved and not left in a cliffhanger for the final one).
Kevin did say that there is room to go back and play in this world at some point in the future, possibly with a trilogy dealing with a new generation. |

On Dune
Dune is Kevin's favourite science fiction book. Like another very famous book, Dune was apparently rejected by every publisher of fiction before being picked up by a smaller publishing house, which in this case specialised in car manuals.
Kevin and Brian had just finished writing the outlines fo the Prelude to Dune trilogy when the safety deposit box with the notes for the 'final' Dune novel was found. More treasures of lost notes were found when Brian decided he needed his own writing office, such as Kevin had, and cleared out a garage for the purpose, finding some archive boxes labelled in his fathers handwriting hiding amongst his storage. These notes combined to give the basis for Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune, and some of Frank Herbert's originals are included in Road to Dune.
A new piece of news (not on Kevin's site yet!) is that next year should see publication of Paul of Dune, which fills in some gaps between Dune and Dune Messiah.
Kevin hinted that there will be even more books...after all there is that 10,000 year history avilable to fill in! |

On Star Wars...
Kevin was one of the earlier authors in the Star Wars playground. As such, he had fewer limitations on what he could write, as there was less 'established' cannon, and also fewer backlist novels to be read to try to maintain consistancy. He has been involved in 54 Star Wars projects so far!
When asked what did he think of what some of 'his' characters have done in novels by other authors he made alluasions to watching your teenage children grow up and leave home, and commented that he was lucky enough to be allowed to "get the borrow the toys and then give them back". |

other books...
X-Files was difficult to write for at the time, as it was an ongoing show, and new episodes were being filmed, some of which meant he had to rewrite portions of non-completed books to avoid contradictions in current and future plotlines in the show.
For Superman (upcoming title Last Days of Krypton), Kevin was intersted in the questions of why was there only one spaceship to escape the planet (why was it baby sized), why was everyone at home when Krypton blew up (instead of some visiting other planets forinstance) and how did it blow up, amonst others. |

OK, I think I've exhausted my memory and notes. Anyone else who was here is more than welcome to add more!
One last thing... Kevin was handing round a clipboard for people to sign up for his newsletter. If you would like to sign up and missed on the night please go to http://www.wordfire.com/anderzone.html

| Paul of Dune will cover the 15 years gap in the Dune plot when Paul Atriedes went from promising young leader to emperor of the local galaxy. Plenty of room for story there. Sort of the change from being the good guy to being the big baddie. |
