Hello fellow fantasy-fanatics!
I'm a year 12 student currently working on my major work for Extention Two English and I've decided to do a short story with FANTASY as its genre!
I was recommended this site by my mentor in this course as a useful starting point to develop ideas from people more experienced than myself in this area.
I've decided to use the subgenre Contemporary Fantasy as the structural framework for my writing and I thought it would be appropriate by addressing the above question:
What is the role of fantasy in our society?
i've now realised that this is a deceptively hard question to answer and would greatly appreciate any help in the matter.
Eager to learn more,
Hydracus

Sounds like an essay question.
If you mean "Why do people read fantasy books?", it would be because the enjoy them, for the escapist relaxation, to exercise their mind, to deal with insomnia, entertainment...

I think fantasy writing is also a good way to address issues that may be sensitive if written in another genre. I'm thinking namely politics, religion and sexuality - when written in 'real writing' genres people often believe them to be the writers real views whereas in fantasy because the stories are so 'unreal' authors have a little more leeway.
Well that's my little thought on the question

Yea, i guess answering the question
"Why do people read fantasy?"
will give the same response as the one I presented!
Thanks Tim and Risso, great responses!
