From The Secret History of The Last Colony By John Scalzi on Subterranean Press:

John Scalzi wrote:
To commemorate the completion of Zoe’s Tale, I thought I’d do something special here for you today and show you something you haven’t seen before: An entire excised chapter from one of my books.

This particular excised chapter comes from an iteration of The Last Colony that I didn’t write (or more accurately, didn’t complete)....

John's post about this on Whatever:

[quote]Interestingly enough, given the last post here, I have a new bit of fiction online for you: An excised chapter of an early version of The Last Colony. As I explain in the introduction to the chapter, it’s no longer a “canonicalâ€

A short story set in the Old Man's War universe. I kept waiting for Mim to post it, since she sent it to us!

From John's blog:

Hey kids! I’m doing a holiday fundraiser!
Short Explanation: Science fiction writer and publisher Vera Nazarian is about to lose her home due to various medical and legal expenses. Various folks are fund raising to help her make the payment on her home. My contribution is to offer you a free short story behind the cut below. If you like it, consider donating a small sum via PayPal, which I will send to Vera next Saturday. For the first $1000 sent to the PayPal via the address provided in this entry, Subterranean Press will match the contribution 1-for-1, effectively doubling your donation.

Btw, the latest report on the LJ community running this fundraiser is that the amount for the overdue mortgage repayment has already been raised and they are working towards dealing with some of the other problems Vera is facing.
