Ofelia is a widow who decides to stay behind, alone, when the colony where she has lived for forty years is evacuated from the planet. She expects to die alone, the only human, the only intelligent being, on the entire world. But at least she will have a little while to enjoy doing what she wants, when she wants, a big change from a lifetime of serving others.
The only problem is. . . she is not alone. Corporate intrigue and alien intelligence interrupt her solitude. Once more other people want to plan her days and tell her what role to play.
This character based story explores the nature of radical change and its effect on both the person who changes and the world around her. Is it ever too late to remake a life, to redefine the self? When is it easiest to change social values? How stable is change begun in solitude, when challenged with social expectations?

This is a ‘stand alone’ book which I enjoyed for a change - the books I have reviewed latterly have been trilogies.
Remmant Population is the story of Ofella and her life alone on a planet far from earth, after the colonists who had settled there 40 years ago had chosen to leave.
She is happy and her life is uncomplicated - until a group of aliens of arrive to invade her way of life. Initially she is scared and apprehensive but gradually she learns to live and love these creatures.
Then, from her old life on earth, a new group arrives and attempts to take over the planet.
This is a good read - I did wonder after a few chapters just where it was going, but as I settled into reading it, I really sterted to enjoy it. Elizabeth Moon has a gift for story telling and taking the reader into the mind of the principal character. Remnant Population is not a scary read and could be enjoyed by all ages, although younger readers may not follow the story.
Read and Enjoy.
