It wasn't the sort of day when the unexpected happened.

Zac Donnigan meets a tramp on a park bench in Brisbane and is transported to ancient Mesopotamia. Here he finds Gilgamesh contemplating freedom from the oppression of the gods. But even stranger, the gods are a race of alien refugees from a galactic war who are manipulating the king for their own ends, and Gilgamesh is a product of genetic experimentation and his friend, Enkidu, is a yeti.

Zac watches it all from the comfort of a virtual reality system, able to enter the characters to see and feel from their point of view. As the story unfolds, Zac wrestles with the question of what it is to be truly human, while also looking for a way to help Gilgamesh defeat Huwawa, the guardian of the gods' spaceport.

The problem is, Zac is invisible.
