On the outskirts of Newport, on the US East Coast, lies an abandoned, feral housing project: the Levels. Inhabited by Newport's forgotten homeless population, the Levels are run as a personal fiefdom by the all-powerful Sorrow.
As THE LEVELS opens, ex-CIA agent Nate Turner, who is in the Levels to find out who has just tried to kill him, meets a 14-year-old girl Ghost. Ghost is a Fury, one of Sorrow's trained, drug-addicted assassins looking for a way back to her normal life.
Also in the Levels is Kate, a suspended cop, who has been told that she has only days to live after being attacked, and infected, by the Beast, a serial killer working the streets. The Beast is out for revenge on Kate's new employer, who he believes created the infection that's killing him, an infection that has also been released into the Levels.
Now Ghost is trying to escape Sorrow, Kate is looking for the Beast and Turner is looking for answers. One thing's for sure, some people aren't going to survive the fallout…

Book review - The Levels by Sean Cregan
Nate Turner, ex-CIA agent, is dead. He knows this because he's seen the pictures of his corpse on the news, shot twice in the head. Now he wants to know why someone ordered his killing, and who was the poor bastard the Police are claiming to be him. To find a place to hide, he runs for the Levels, an abandoned housing project, occupied by the homeless, and ruled with an iron fist by the mysterious figure called Sorrow. There he meets Ghost, a fourteen year old girl who's been turned into a drug addicted, trained assaassin & enforcer, who just wants to get her life back. Meanwhile a serial killer called the Beast is prowling the streets, slaughtering those he is hunting in revenge for infecting him with a lethal virus. Kate, ex-cop, busted for corruption, has been infected with the Beast's sickness. Now all she wants is a cure before it kills her, too. 4 people, drawn together by circumstance, must try to figure out what is happening, and try to fix it. Being alive at the end would be a nice bonus........
Cregan has written a hard core first novel, with a style reminisicient of Gibson cyberpunk crossed with Lansdale or Child, creating a gritty, realistic look at the near future, where corruption & mismanagement rule, and all you can do is try to stay alive. With the emphasis on 'try'. Escaping Police, avoiding assassins from the Tower, deals with underworld figures, designer drugs, high tech weapons & a quest for answers, all combine to make this a fascinating read and a good indicator of an author to keep an eye on for future books. It will definitely be interesting to see whether he can maintain the pace & style in future novels.
