Ethrea is an island in the centre of the most important shipping route in the world. For four hundred years, it has been a land of peace and impregnable security, a perfect trading hub - and keeper of secrets.

The imminent death of Ethrea's king has placed his surviving daughter, Rian, in a dangerous position. The church has great power in Ethrea, and it says that no woman may have dominion over a man. If Rian can take and hold her throne – can she also keep it safe from the armies of the rest of the world? An exile from Mijak may be her only hope ...

Review by Josephine Crowley:

This is book two of the “Godspeaker” series. It is the story Rhian and her battles to claim her inheritance and become queen of Ethrea.
Book one, which I also reviewed, I found very bloody and cruel and at times quite evil, but it is important to read book one, Empress of Mijik, first. Of course these two books are connected but that connection does not become apparent until well into the story.
I really, REALLY, enjoyed the Riven Kingdom. It is not as bloody, gory and cruel as book one. Princess Rhian is a loveable and kind girl, and with her chief off-siders, Jones, Ursa and Zandaka adventure ensues. This book at times makes an exciting and very tense read.
Once again Karen Miller has written a well constructed story. She has the ability to pull you right into the story as if one were really present and part of the story. Congratulations Karen, readers will enjoy this series.

Review by Diane Priday:

This is book 2 of a series. It would be best to read the first book, as it takes time in this book to put together flashbacks and see how the story is going. The main character is obscured and the story moves around the death of a king and his daughter.
Slowly the connection is mage between bloodthirsty barbarians and runaway princess's.
The story moves along quite nicely and it is with regret we reach the end of the book. I am quite looking forward to the next one.
Well worth the read - can't wait for book 3.
